Is the wood-chip business highly profitable? This is a question that many of my clients often ask me. Let me give you the answer first: It’s a highly lucrative, even extremely profitable, industry in rural areas. Of course, the actual profitability largely depends on what materials we shred and—more importantly—on the channels through which we sell those materials afterward. Different materials and different sales channels will lead to vastly different profit margins. Generally speaking, the common finished wood products we produce include wood chips, sawdust, and wood powder. Don’t underestimate these materials—after all, as the saying goes, “Every inch has its own strength, every foot its own weakness.” Even tiny pieces of shredded wood can hold great value. Those seemingly insignificant scraps—such as small branches, twigs, and wood offcuts—can generate annual incomes of over 100,000 yuan once they’re processed and sold. It’s truly an exceptionally profitable industry.
Is the wood-chip business highly profitable? This is a question that many of my clients often ask me. Let me give you the answer first: It’s a highly lucrative, even “super-profitable,” industry in rural areas. Of course, the profitability largely depends on what materials we’re grinding—and where those materials can be sold afterward. Different materials and different sales channels will lead to vastly different profit margins. Generally speaking, the common finished wood chips we produce include wood flakes, sawdust, and wood powder. Don’t underestimate these products—there’s a saying that “every inch has its own strength.” Even tiny wood scraps can generate significant value. Those seemingly insignificant wood chips, branches, and wood offcuts, when processed and ground into fine particles, can bring in annual revenues of over 100,000 yuan—a pretty impressive, super-profitable industry. After being ground, wood can be used in numerous industries, including papermaking, power generation, bedding products, animal feed, fertilizers, organic mulch, particleboard, fiberboard, medium-density fiberboard, and more. Moreover, these wood-based materials can be made from recycled wood instead of virgin timber, fully aligning with China’s green and environmental protection requirements. At the same time, it allows for the rational utilization of waste wood and wood offcuts, reducing pollution to the surrounding environment—truly a win-win situation. Currently, wood-chip processing plants mainly handle the following products: Wood flakes are one of the coarser types of ground wood products. They’re relatively easy to process and have a wide range of applications. To produce wood flakes, we use flakers—machines that grind wood all at once. These machines can process waste wood, logs, branches, twigs, bamboo, and wood offcuts. The finished product looks roughly like matchbox-sized wood flakes, so there’s no need for extreme precision; they’re easy to process and yield high output. Nowadays, there are many construction sites, generating plenty of waste formwork and old wood. Additionally, many old wooden houses are being demolished to make way for new ones, so the demand for ground wood flakes has surged in recent years. The ground wood flakes are primarily sold to paper mills for paper production. Currently, the selling price for one ton of finished wood flakes ranges from about 600 to 1,000 yuan, averaging around 800 yuan per ton. Meanwhile, the purchase price for raw wood is about 300–400 yuan per ton. So, after deducting labor, machinery, transportation, and other costs, the net profit per ton can reach between 150 and 200 yuan. Although the profit margin may seem moderate, the volume of this material is huge—some grinding plants can process up to hundreds of tons of wood flakes per day. Therefore, overall, the profits remain quite substantial, especially if the raw materials are plentiful. Sawdust is another commonly seen ground product on the market. The raw materials for making sawdust are abundant—branches, twigs, logs, wood offcuts, and more can all be used. Processing sawdust is slightly more complicated than processing wood flakes, and the yield is lower. Generally, the finer the sawdust, the easier it sells, the wider its applications, and the higher its price. Since sawdust doesn’t require high-quality wood, the raw material cost is relatively low—around 200 yuan per ton when purchased. But when sold, it can fetch around 600 yuan per ton, giving a gross profit of nearly 400 yuan per ton. After accounting for various expenses, we can still pocket a net profit of about 100–200 yuan per ton. The yield of sawdust isn’t very high—large wood-grinding machines can process only a few tons per hour, and dozens of tons per day. Calculating based on this, even if each ton yields a net profit of just over 100 yuan, the daily net profit could easily reach several thousand yuan. This profit margin is still quite good, and the calculation is fairly objective—this is precisely why many people are investing in the wood-grinding industry. Wood powder is mainly used in the fragrance industry, but it can also serve as a raw material for leather goods, clothing, papermaking, electrical appliances, household items, paints, cat litter, chemicals, insulation materials, outdoor decorative materials, building materials, and many other products. Its applications are extremely broad. Wood powder is particularly fine—typically requiring a mesh size of around 80 mesh. It feels similar to the flour we use at home in terms of fineness. Because processing wood powder is somewhat tricky and the yield is relatively low, its price is higher than both wood flakes and sawdust—usually selling for over a thousand yuan per ton. However, since the processing costs of wood powder are high and manufacturing expenses aren’t low either, the profit margin isn’t as high as that of wood flakes or sawdust. Ultimately, the net profit we receive is comparable to that of sawdust and wood flakes. We can process anywhere from a few tons to around ten tons of wood powder per day, with a net profit of about 200 yuan per ton. That means daily profits can easily exceed a thousand yuan. Overall, the total profit is much lower compared to processing wood flakes and sawdust. Today, there are many varieties of wood-grinding machines available on the market, with the most common types including flakers, sawdust machines, wood-powder machines, and wood-shredders. The main function of these machines is to slice and grind wood. If we look at them in greater detail, they can be further divided into mechanical grinders, air-flow grinders, and milling machines. Each type of machine has different uses and is suited for processing different kinds of materials. If you’re planning to invest in a wood-grinding plant in a rural area, the initial investment typically ranges from 30,000 to 100,000 yuan—depending on the method and approach you choose. Usually, buying the machinery itself only requires 30,000–50,000 yuan. Other expenses vary widely, so I can’t give you an exact figure. You’ll have to assess them yourself. In any case, an initial investment of around 100,000 yuan is definitely sufficient to get started. In closing: That’s all I wanted to share with you today—the profit margins and related knowledge of the wood-grinding industry. I’d also like to remind everyone that although the wood-chip business can be quite lucrative—some wood-flake processors can earn over several hundred thousand yuan annually—it’s crucial to have stable supply sources and sales channels, especially a steady supply of raw materials. Only then can you truly make money. Therefore, before entering this business, you must carefully consider both supply and sales channels. If these two aspects are secure, then and only then should you think about starting your own operation. Otherwise, don’t invest blindly—absolutely do not!
